Families of 53 victims from a recent military airstrike in Kaduna State sued the Nigerian government for U.S.$41 million (N33 billion) in compensation, reports Ameh Ejekwonyilo for Premium Times.
The airstrike led to a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by a representative of the victims’ families. The suit demands acknowledgment of the victims’ right to life, deems the airstrike illegal, and asks for compensation and a public apology. An affidavit in support of the suit detailed how the airstrike occurred during 7a celebration, resulting in indiscriminate casualties.
The Nigerian Army, though admitting its mistake, has not responded formally to the lawsuit, which is awaiting assignment to a judge for a hearing.
