The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South East Zone and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ANSEMA) continued their flood preparedness and waste management sensitization program in Ogbaru and Ayamelum LGAs, which are prone to flooding. This initiative aims to enhance community resilience, encourage participation in disaster risk reduction, and mitigate the potential impacts of the 2024 flood disaster in Anambra State.
During the program, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, Acting Zonal Coordinator of NEMA South East, emphasized the importance of community involvement in disaster management, highlighting the need for cooperation among federal, state, and local government bodies, as well as the public. She called on local government chairmen to activate Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), create emergency response plans, clear drainages, discourage improper waste disposal, remove structures from flood plains, monitor water levels, identify higher grounds, and maintain communication with NEMA.
Okolo Kingsley, a senior NEMA official, gave a presentation on flood preparedness and waste management in Igbo to ensure better understanding among participants, supplemented by flyers in both English and Igbo. The session also included a brainstorming segment where attendees, including local government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders, engaged in discussions and asked questions.
This initiative builds on previous efforts, including the visit of the NEMA Director-General to Anambra State on July 3rd to discuss flood risk reduction strategies with the State Governor and stakeholders, based on 2024 NIMET/NIHSA predictions.
